Pitts on Iran Proposal Vote

Statement

Date: Sept. 2, 2015
Location: Washington, DC

Rep. Joseph R. Pitts (R-PA) today issued the following statement in response to the announcement that there is now an insufficient number of votes in the Senate to override a Presidential veto of a Congressional disapproval of the President's Iran proposal:

"The majority of both chambers of Congress oppose the President's proposal. That it now has the tepid, qualified support of one-third of the Senate does not at all change the fact that it is manifestly dangerous to the United States and to the peace of the world. Indeed, the more we learn about the Administration's policy toward Iran, the clearer it is that the agreement is unsound. For example, we just learned that IAEA inspectors will not have access to the Parchin military complex, but will have to rely on Iran's own inspections of that site. The verification mechanisms in the deal are proving to be even weaker than we had thought. The President's proposal is no wiser today than it was yesterday, or when it was first announced, and it is on this basis that it ought to be judged."
